Midlife Crisis Underway
Delta checks out the new "furniture" in the family room, then goes looking for earplugs.

The drumset is on long-term loan from Dave E. Thanks, buddy!

Jill Sobule and Fan Financing
I saw an AP story about Jill Sobule, who's collecting money to record her next record. A snippet from the article:
I've seen Jill just once, at Judith Owen and Harry Shearer's Holiday Sing-Along in 2006. She was fabulous.
You can contribute at JillsNextRecord.com. I'm in; I just have to decide how much.
Contributors can choose a level of pledges ranging from the $10 "unpolished rock," which earns them a free digital download of her disc when it's made, to the $10,000 "weapons-grade plutonium level," where she promises "you get to come and sing on my CD. Don't worry if you can't sing - we can fix that on our end."
For the $500 "gold level," Sobule will mention your name in a song, maybe even rhyme with it. The $750 "gold doubloons level" is "exactly like the gold level, but you give me more money."

Cary Nasatir on "Taming the Volume Beast in the Percussion Section"
My pal Cary Nasatir has a new article on the Vic Firth website entitled Taming the Volume Beast in the Percussion Section. He talks about drumstick selection, drum stands and hardware, the angle of the drum itself, and tuning up drums. He also addresses player confidence and motivation. Good reading.
But it's funny: Cary doesn't explain how to get drummers to stop talking between pieces. That's the real volume beast! (Just kidding, buddy ...)

Talk About Burying the Lede ...
A good-hearted wire service story talks about Ringo Starr returning to Liverpool to mark the city's year as a European Capital of Culture. Ringo and Dave Stewart (the musician, not the pitcher) will headline an outdoor concert featuring 600 local musicians. Good for them. Here's the official Liverpool 2008 website.
The last paragraph of the story reads: "Stavanger, Norway, is the other culture capital for 2008." Who knew? And who will be Stavanger's Ringo? Here's the official Stavanger 2008 website; there's an English-language button in the upper left corner.
